Chef/Owners Brian McCracken and Dana Tough of Spur, Tavern Law and The Coterie Room joined Terry Jaymes and Providence Cicero on their Let's Eat radio show. They talked about their newest spot, The Old Sage, which is set to open late winter near Tavern Law on Seattle's Capitol Hill.  You can listen to them discuss the process of coming up with menus, spaces and inspirations for their restaurants. They also dig into getting past the egos... how Seattle's Wild West history always plays a role... even what their favorite fast food spots are. (Hurrah for Taco Time!)

New Veterinary Practice Urban Animal Talks Pet Safety for Halloween on KIRO

Dr. Cherri Trusheim of the new Urban Animal veterinary practice (www.UrbanAnimalNW.com) on Seattle's Capitol Hill was on air this afternoon talking dogs and Halloween costumes.  KIRO Anchor Ursula Reutin tapped the doc for her tips on what to avoid on Halloween night.  Dr. Trusheim's two cents?  Dogs don't really want to be dressed up but if you've got to do it, make sure they are comfortable and can see.  Pretty common sense really. 

Dolly Parton costume not recommended.  Cone of Shame may be a good addition however.

KIRO Radio's Seattle Morning Show News Anchor Covers Pet Spending: Interviews Urban Animal and Den Haus

This story by KIRO's morning news anchor Ursala Reutin ran today on pet spending. The story with interviews with Sarah Pierce of Den Haus and Dr. Trusheim reports, in part:

"Dr. Cherri Trusheim is the veterinarian and owner of Urban Animal, which just opened on Capitol Hill. She says she's also guilty of spoiling her dogs. "We have two dogs at home that I know, any stuffed toy I buy, they will kill it. And they will do it quickly and de-stuff it and pull out the squeaker. But I'll still come home with a $10 stuffy even though I know it will only last five minutes," Trusheim says. Vet bills are one of the reasons spending on pets is soaring but she says one of their goals at Urban Animal (www.UrbanAnimalnw.com) is to offer clients a range of services to meet their budget.

She thinks as society has become more "connected" with iPhones and Blackberries, we've become disconnected from people, and we're putting more emotion, energy and money into our four-legged friends.

 

"It's easier than having a human companion, in many ways, but we are starting to tip the scale a little bit because our dogs don't understand that kind of relationship. They're a dog and the happiest dogs are the ones that know they're a dog," she says.

The most recent census figures show that Seattle has about 140,000 dogs, compared with just over 93,000 kids."

New York, San Antonio, Seattle and Beyond: Better Because is Moving a Mountain of Discouragement

The good for you Better Because movement takes flight.

Inspired by the Dalai Lama, in the middle of a recession two pals, moms, and self proclaimed "rat racers", Ginny Hutchinson and Cathy Haffner jumped from their Fortune 100 careers to launch Better Because. In no time flat 4,300+ new folks have friended them on Facebook and sent in smiles and stories from around the globe of what their life is "better because of" today. Nordstrom has snapped-up the duo's book, "Better Because of You", and will carry it for the holidays. Proceeds from book sales support "Room to Read", a great non-profit that builds libraries for children in need in Asia and Africa.

In NYC, cosmetic genius Trish McEvoy ordered 50 books to give to her friends. In Seattle, Union Bank Mortgage Consultant Aaron Tyler purchased 32 books for each of his co-workers and couldn't believe the
response-- just the cover put a smile on their faces.

Folks with the flu have read it to their families, those recovering from heart surgery have shared the book as a thank you to friends who visited them at the hospital, while others have turned to the book for ways to comfort grief stricken family dealing with tragedy. Powerful stuff here.

Featured yesterday on KIRO's CEO Spotlight, Cathy and Ginny talked how wonderfully rewarding it is to help others in these tough times.

In San Antonio recently, they shared their "attitude of gratitude" and simple ways to focus on the little things that make life better.
