Quack: A University of Oregon Grad Like our Grandad

Our father's dad (pictured here in the hat) was a Duck football player, coach plus UW Husky coach. My mother-in-law Caroline Dickey was a proud Duck too and our client Rosanna, another card-carrying Duck, makes dishes. The UO's alumni magazine talks about Rosanna Bowles today saying,

The Seattle Times Showcases Farmers Market Collection from Rosanna Inc

In her story on al fresco meals Alison Brownrigg wrote today, "Local ceramic designer Rosanna Bowles of Rosanna, Inc. creates pieces that add that "certain something" to a tabletop, and advises that "The best set table reflects nature's beauty. Set a table that allows nature to take center stage."

Her new line called Farmer's Market (from $20), covered with illustrations of carrots, garlic, peas and olives, is so fresh and alive with nature's beauty that it actually might give the real food a run for its money.

"Use vintage cotton or linen tablecloths that will give a fresh-off-the-clothesline feel," Bowles continues. In order to set the mood, she suggests "placing many clear small votives with tea lights down the center of the table or a clear hurricane candle holder to keep the candle lit. Dine at dusk, a magical time when nature is at its best.""

Tableware Designer Rosanna Bowles New Book Featured on iVillage

A health tip from Rosanna Bowles new book goes viral: #1 item on Glamour website that weekend

What a delight it was to collaborate with Sarah again, resulting in a wonderful tip from author and tableware designer Rosanna Bowles really sparking with Glamour magazine readers. The piece was called, " The Brilliant, Zero-Calorie Way to End Pre-Dinner Snacking (I Can't Believe I Didn't Think of This!)".

It read, "Are you guilty of nibbling, sampling and snacking before dinner? I am! When I'm cooking, I'm constantly taste-testing, which isn't a bad thing, but it can start to add up calorically. But, I recently read about this terrific tip to zap pre-dinner munching that totally works (I tried it last night) in the loveliest new book ...

I recently checked out designer Rosanna Bowles new book Coming Home: A Seasonal Guide to Creating Family Traditions (Stewart, Tabori & Chang). Bowles is a designer whose tableware line (photo below), Rosanna, has been an Oprah Winfrey favorite, but her book, packed with tips, ideas and more than 50 recipes, proves that she's also wise in the ways of healthy, mindful living and eating.

In the book, she shared a little trick she uses, while cooking up big feasts for family and friends, that helps her avoid overeating before dinner (and by the look of her svelte frame, I'd say the trick works!):

"Hot water in a mug! This is a great drink to enjoy while you're cooking dinner. It suppresses your appetite to help you feel full until dinner's ready. Also, try drinking hot water during the day instead of flavored drinks. It's good for the body and keeps you warm. Be sure to use a pretty porcelain mug, which makes even plain water feel special."

I heard a similar tip from a yoga teacher once, and it wasn't until reading Rosanna's book that I decided to try it recently, and yep, it does seem a little boring to sip hot water, but oddly, it works!"

Best Selling Cookbook Author Braiden Rex-Johnson on Dishware Designer Bowles' New Book

Braiden is a best-selling cookbook author; a regular contributor to Pacific Northwest, The Seattle Times Sunday magazine; and a columnist for Wine Press Northwest and Amazon.com's Al Dente blog. In her Northwest Wining & Dining she offered a lovely recap of author and designer Rosanna Bowles' book launch this month: "Once the crowd quieted down, Rosanna thanked her daughter, Howard Schultz (yes, THE Howard Schultz of Starbucks fame, a close friend), John Granen (the photographer who followed her all over the world taking pictures of her for the book), Dr. Pepper Schwartz (well-known sociologist and Rosanna’s agent), but most of all her mother. 'My mother, who is no longer with us, was my muse and role model and the love of my life,' she said. 'All I am doing is passing along her legacy to you.'"
